A horse's career starts and ends by the condition of their hooves. Damaged or weak hooves can force even the best of horses to sit on the side lines until they are better. That's why it's so important to ensure a horse receives a combination of essential nutrients and hoof care.
Many supplement companies offer different options and reasons to use one type of mineral or vitamin over another, a flavor of the week. Only certain minerals have been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on growing and strengthening the hooves of horses. It's those ingredients that ETA-Equine has used in their Masters Circle Supplements.
The key minerals are copper and zinc, together they help to promote hoof growth. It is important that the Copper and Zinc be mixed together in ideal ratios for best results in hoof care. The Masters Circle Elite Hoof supplement contains these minerals in chilated form. Minerals in chilated form are more expensive to produce but give a mineral that is more concentrated, more quickly absorbed, and better utilized by the horse's metabolism. Also contained in the supplement is Biotin, a B vitamin that has been shown to help in hoof growth. Horses produce some Biotin naturally though not in large enough quantities to really see substantial gains in hoof growth. For this reason it is a stable ingredient in our Elite Hoof supplement along with chilated Zinc and Copper.
Supplements are only part of the solution for healthy hooves. Preventative care is just as important and begins before the farrier comes to see a horse.
Hooves will grow more quickly with increasing daylight. This means the greatest and most noticeable gains occur during the spring and summer months. These are also the months where horses are most likely to be exposed to wet and humid conditions. In these conditions horses are more prone to hooves becoming soft and suffering from sole abscesses. While in dry conditions often seen in winter, hooves are more likely to become brittle and crack. That's why it is important to keep stalls clean and provide mud free turnout areas.
With our Elite Hoof supplement and a proactive approach to ensure healthy hoof conditions in stalls and paddocks you can make sure your farrier sees the best hooves on your horse. Supplements are preventative measures by their nature, it is important to get a horse started on them at a young age to ensure a happy and healthy career and retirement.
Don't wait to make sure your horse has all the vitamin and mineral necessary in their diet for a healthy life. Go to the Masters Circle Elite Hoof product page today and get the supplements your horse needs.

Masters Circle® hay comes in two mix blends, the Townships Blend, baled with black strings and the Appalachian Blend™, baled with white strings. The Townships Blend™ is made up of Timothy, Brome, and Orchard, the higher proportion being Timothy. It averages 9% protein. ETA-Equine is looking forward to the relationship with Moore Equine Feed & Supply and the opportunity to provide the sport horse world of Southern Pines with exactly the type of hay they need and deserve.
Mike Samson, ETA-Equine’s president and CEO explains. “The goal of Masters Circle® hay is solely to help produce sounder and stronger horses for the 3 major classical equine disciplines. It is now very well documented that horses need proper equine leaf to stem ratio hay for their specific complex equine digestive system. This leaf to stem ratio is where ETA-Equine differentiates itself from other hay producers. We have developed with the best labs and university research the optimal ratios that are proprietary to ETA-Equine. The objective is not as much the type of hay and grass but rather the proper mixture to optimize the horse’s digestive system and get as a result a well-balanced nutritional factor without at the same time hindering the emotional or psychological factor for training and competition. The look of the hay is not an objective but lab tests and riders results are at ETA-Equine. This is why the best classical competitors trust and feed Masters Circle® hay. Competitors trust Moore Equine Feed & Supply as great and efficient suppliers, thriving to better the competition level and training of all classical disciplines, making them our best partner to bring you the Masters Circle® blends of hay. Our approach to nutrition is what we call the Four Founding Pillars of the Horse. When a horse's diet is built upon the Four Pillars, then their diet truly raises a horse from amateur level all the way to a top competition level of performance. Each of our supplements targets one or more aspects of these pillars building upon one another to support your horse’s diet. Ensuring a healthy, happy, calm, and well performing horse.
The first pillar is a horse's cardio vascular capabilities and energy control. For a horse to reach the level of being a top competition level contender then he must be properly trained to increase his cardiovascular capabilities. His ability to manage energy levels (the absorption, retention and usage of energy) will help with stamina and making sure he has enough energy to spare at the end of a training session or a competition. A number of our supplements are formulated to help support the development and maintenance of this fundamental pillar in a horse.
The second pillar is suppleness. A horse must have joint and ligaments that can stand the strain placed on them, repair micro fractures in the tissue, and perform the full range of motion required by horses in all disciplines. A number of our supplements are formulated to help support the development and maintenance of this pillar.
The third pillar is the body. A horse must have a body that can withstand the demands placed on it by top level competition and come out on top better than ever. This includes aspects of the body such as muscles, bone, hooves, and especially the gastro intestinal tract. All these aspects of a horse's body are pushed to the edge in top competition level horses, and only when all are properly maintained does a horse's body becomes a well oiled machine. A number of our supplements are formulated to help support the development and maintenance of this pillar.
The fourth pillar is the mind. A horse must have a calm and sound mind yet also be alert and responsive. Many horses can become distracted and nervous under the pressures of competition. Those that remain calm and composed yet attentive and responsive to their rider’s commands perform at a level higher than others. A number of our supplements are formulated to help support the development and maintenance of this pillar.
Each of our Masters Circle Supplements targets one or multiple aspects of these pillars. Together along with a healthy diet they build up these pillars and raise the level of performance, comfort, and total well being of horses.
We choose quality and efficacy over low cost ingredients because quality is essential to the superior results you will see when using our products. For that reason we source all our ingredients from Alltech and we worked closely with Alltech (sponsors of the Alltech/FEI World Equestrian Games), nutritionists, veterinarians, and riders to formulate the ideal supplements line of products. We've done away with anything your horse doesn't need and focused on supplement mixes that will bring out the best in all horses on their journey from amateur level to top level performance.

ETA-Equine has worked in close partnerships with Alltech and Belisle nutritional labs, nutritionists, veterinarians, and high level athletes to develop the Masters Circle line of supplements with a unique approach to equine nutrition.
We developed our line of supplements around what we call the four founding pillars of the horse. When a horse's diet is built upon the four pillars, then their diet truly raises a horse to a higher level of performance. Each of our supplements targets one or more aspects of these pillars building upon one another to support your horses diet. Ensuring a healthy, happy, calm, and well performing horse.
Because the supplements build upon one another you are sure your horse is getting exactly what they need for targeted nutritional needs.
Here is how it works, our Base Supplement (available in powdered or pelleted form) is the foundation from which every other supplements is added. It is a total supplement mix designed to target all aspects of the four pillars. All other supplements are added on top of the Base as a dressing to the Base Supplement mix.
An example of this is a horse with hoof issues and who competes. This horse would benefit from the Base Supplement mix, with our Fortifier Supplement mix to help give all the nutrients an active and competing horse needs, and our Elite Hoof Supplement mix dressed on top of these two for target hoof support.
This approach allows you to cater a supplement regime to every horse and no longer have to give the same supplement mix to all horses. Why give hoof targeting supplements or B1 supplements to horses who don't need them?
Horses are professional athletes, we think it's time to start treating them like ones and the first place to start is making sure their diet has all the nutritional elements they need. Riders all agree, Masters Circle Supplements is the first choice in equine nutrition and the best choice for your horse.

Wellington, Florida- June 27, 2014- Lauren Sammis is in hot pursuit of the Pan American Games with her recent success in the ring and a unique two month training opportunity in the U.K. Sammis recently won the Intermediare II and FEI High Score Award at Centerline Events in Saugerties, New York aboard Lombardo V, a 10-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by Hope Greenfield. Focused on taking her horses to the next level, she is headed to a town called Coolham, just south of London, to take advantage of an amazing training opportunity. Sammis will spend the next two months under the tutelage of renowned Finnish Dressage trainer and multiple Olympian Kyra Kyrklund. “I have never had the opportunity to have two months of daily lessons in my entire career,” said Sammis. “The main goal of this trip is training.”
Sammis gives credit to the forage diet of Eastern Townships Acreages Equine hay (ETA-Equine) to which Cavalor feed is also added in part for the top performance of her horses. As a horsewoman and an athlete she understands the importance of good nutrition for the success of every athlete whether it be horse or human. Sammis has been endorsing Eastern Townships Acreages Equine hay since January of this year and is a member of their prestigious MASTERS CIRCLE Riding Team. She has seen a major difference in the condition of her horses since she started feeding ETA-Equine hay. “ETA-Equine hay has balanced the diet of my horses, stabilizing their weight and keeping them in top condition,” said Sammis. “Especially Lombardo V(aka Cinco), he is a very finicky eater and since he has been on ETA-Equine hay and Cavalor grain his health and overall body condition has improved greatly.”
Eastern Townships Acreages is based out of Quebec, Canada with a U.S. head quarter in Vermont. ETA-Equine is known for superior equine quality hay mixtures that are comprised of their best hay varieties. Included in their nutritionally sound hay blends are propriety ratios of Timothy, Brome, Orchard grass and Clover. In addition to appealing to the taste buds of horses, ETA-Equine’s blends provide performance horses with the important fiber-to-protein ratios they need so badly. As a result, it’s easier for trainers and horse owners to feed and care for their horses. The scientific and modern nutritional concepts involved in the creation of ETA-Equine’s hay blends were developed exclusively with horses in mind. Regardless of whether a horse is involved in active leisure riding or competes in events and shows, the hay blend mixtures at Eastern Townships Acreages Equine (http://ETA-Equine.com/pages/our-townships-blend/) provide complete nutrition and appealing taste that horses love.
Sammis will spend July and August in the United Kingdom, her plan is to return to the U.S. to compete in the CDI at Saugerties, NY, which is one of the Pan American Games qualifications.

The decision came after the FEI Evaluation Commission’s report was presented at the start of the Bureau’s two-day meeting at FEI Headquarters in Lausanne (SUI) today.
The Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park, venue for the Montreal 1976 Olympic equestrian events, will be the hub for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2018. Bromont/Montreal is only the second host outside Europe following the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2010 which were staged in Lexington, Kentucky (USA).
Lexington was the other remaining bidder for the 2018 Games. The Bureau felt that both bids were impressive but that Bromont/Montreal was the stronger of the two.
“We are really delighted to award the 2018 Games to Bromont/Montreal,” said FEI President HRH Princess Haya said after the Bureau decision. “The Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park is an exceptional and proven venue, and will be the ideal location for the eighth edition of the FEI World Equestrian Games, our most global equestrian event.
“We are now just 75 days from the opening ceremony of the 2014 Games in the heart of Normandy, when over 500,000 spectators and millions of TV viewers will watch the best equine and human athletes compete for world titles over two weeks of absolutely top equestrian sport. And four years from now, the Games will be heading to Canada, where we expect even larger audiences on the ground and on television as equestrian sport continues its global growth.”

X]]>Good forage, what to look for and why your horse needs it.
There are many different opinions on what to look for in hay and they change depending on who you ask. Some of the factors people look at to determine if hay is good are subjective and often have no basis on the quality of the hay. This article will cover the things you really should be focusing on when choosing hay and forage for your horse, the things to avoid, and why forage can help your horse.
What to look for in hay
Lab analysis: Out of all the things you can look at to determine if a certain forage is good for your horse, the lab analysis is the most crucial. If a hay producer cannot show you a lab analysis for a crop of hay then the chances are high the hay was not intended for the delicate digestive system of horses but likely meant for cattle. When looking at a lab analysis the most important thing to look at is the protein level of the forage. Good forage can be either lower in protein or higher in protein, which one is best depends on the activity level of a horse. Lower protein hay should be around 9% and higher level protein hay around 12%. A mix of higher protein hay and processed feed than can be bad for a horse. At ETA-Equine we also have a bailing and drying method for hay that allows us to bale at a much higher humidity level and still have a hay that cures perfectly. Allowing the production of the finest hay specifically formulated for horses. Hay for cattle is normally not able to reach such high humidity levels when baled and still be safe for a horse to consume.
Consistency: It is important that hay fed to a horse is consistent year round. Their delicate digestive system can be shocked if their diet changes suddenly, a leading cause of colics. ETA-Equine ensures consistent quality hay to all the equine athletes it supplies, ensuring peace of mind to owners and riders.
No dust: Dust can be present inside of a bale of hay either due to the environment where it was baled or due to legumes (alfalfa) present in the hay when baled and dried. These legumes dry up and fall apart creating dust inside the bale. Any form of dust can be hazardous to a horse’s respiratory system.
Not wet inside: Hay can be a challenge to bale since it requires time to dry in the field once cut, and even more time to dry indoors afterwards. Hay not given enough time to dry properly or baled in the rain will form fungus and mold inside the bale. This can be fatal to a horse.
No musty or salty smell: A musty or salty smell present inside a hay bale, usually accompanied by a caramel brown colour, indicates that a bale cooked on the inside. This usually happens when hay is improperly baled and improperly stored. hay like this is bad for a horse and should be avoided. Good hay will have that fresh hay smell all horse owners and riders know and love.
Green colour: a nice green colour to the hay is normally preferable though not a perfect indicator of hay quality. yellow hay on the outside of a bale indicates light sun damage. As long as it is still green under the yellow hay then it is still good. If you are looking at potential hay to buy and some of it is yellowed on the outside, take a few clumps of hay out of the yellowed side with your hand to see if it is still green underneath.
Leafy & long stemmed: Hay that is leafy has a better protein level than non leafy hay with big heads, all the energy is located in the leaf of the plant. Long stems are also important to provide a horse with something they can chew for long periods. This allows the forage to absorb enough saliva during chewing to counteract the buildup of acid in their stomach, helping prevent gastric ulcers.
Types of hay to avoid
Silage hay: Silage should not be fed to horses, doing so means risking the horse suffering botulism poisoning which will kill a horse. Silage is accomplished by baling and wrapping freshly cut hay before it has a change to dry. This allows the hay to ferment and when done properly preserve the hay longer than normal even in weather conditions less than ideal such as rain and snow. If any tear occurs in the wrapping, a mouse is trapped inside and dies, or one of any other factors happens then the hay will spoil and turn poisonous to horses. Cattle will have no problem eating the hay though, their digestive tracts are hardier and they benefit from multiple stomachs. This is why Silage hay is usually reserved for cattle and not horses.
Pure alfalfa & cubed alfalfa: Alfalfa is not actually a forage but a legume, which is the reason it has such a high protein level. This makes it ideal as a treat for a horse due to its natural sweetness, but beyond that it is not ideal for a horse. Horses whose diets consists primarily of alfalfa are more prone to colics and gastric ulcers.
Benefits of good forage in a horse’s diet
A horse that has a diet of good forage benefits from controlled energy levels and has an easier time regulating the body temperature. They stay more easily between their lower critical temperature (LCT) and their higher critical temperature (HCT). keeping a horse at a body temperature they are comfortable at allows them to conserve energy, perform better and maintain a calm disposition. Horses that are calm thanks to normal energy levels are also less prone to stall vices, not to mention a more controlled weight. Long stemmed forage will also reduce the occurrence of gastric ulcers unlike an improper diet of high amounts of concentrated feeds or alfalfa. Long stem hay also promotes more chewing of the forage and can help horses that are prone to choke slow down while eating.
Regardless of the kind of horse in question, forage is absolutely needed. The horse has evolved over the years to feed off of forage. A diet that uses only processed feed for a horse is bad for their health. Some horse owners may find that feeding a horse only hay is boring for a horse, but horses are creatures that crave the same boring routine. It reassures them to know their routine and keeps them calm. Their digestive system also needs the same constant routine, sudden changes send the digestive system in a panic and can cause colics. That said; processed feed is useful in adding a little extra energy to a horse’s diet or to bulk them up, especially with very active horses. It should not however replace forage in any circumstance.
ETA-Equine’s premium horse hay blends are grown to the highest standard and provide the best hay possible for all types of horses consistently year round. Both the Township Blend and the Appalachian Blend are grown to meet the strictest conditions, and are horse hay certified. When our Masters Circle team riders order ETA-Equine hay they know they are consistently getting the best hay to meet their standards and the taste standards of even the pickiest horses.

What causes it?
Colics can be broken down into three main categories; simple obstructions, strangulating obstructions, and non-strangulating infarction. Simple obstructions typically cover all types of impactions such as food impaction. Strangulating obstructions cover all the various forms of entrapments. And finally non-strangulating infarctions cover the various types of infections that can develop and cause abdominal pain. Also categorized as a kind of colic are gastric ulcers, an all too common form of colic caused by improper feed diets. Here is a list of different types of colics divided into the three main categories covered above.
Simple obstructions
Pelvic flexure impaction
Spasmadic colic
Ileal impaction
Sand impaction
Entroliths
Strangulating obstruction
Left dorsal displacement
Right dorsal displacement
Torsion
Intussusception
Epiploic Foramen Entrapment
Stanulating Lipoma
Mesenteric rent entrapment
Non-strangulating infarctions
Large round worms
Cyathostomes
Gastric ulceration
Though not technically part of the three categories described above, gastric ulcers fall under the definition of colics as they cause abdominal pains. They are caused by the constant production of acid in the stomach and are normally counteracted by saliva. Feed that does not allow a horse to chew for long periods of time will not absorb the necessary saliva needed to counteract the acid buildup in the stomach. This is what makes long stem hay and forage ideal for any horses diet. ETA-Equine has long stem mix blend hay developed exclusively for horses that will help combat some of the causes of gastric ulcers. With two different blends, the Township Blend and the Appalachian Blend, It is the ideal forage for horses of all activity levels and types. Gastric Ulcers can also be caused by the following:
What is a colic?
A Colic can be defined as any abdominal pain and by itself is not a diagnosis but a sign that something is causing abdominal pain to a horse. It encompasses all forms of gastrointestinal conditions which cause pain as well as other causes of abdominal pain not related to the gastrointestinal tract. That said, the most common forms of colics are related to the gastrointestinal tract and most frequently related in some way to a colonic disturbance.
Colics are the leading cause of death among domesticated horses, many types of colics require surgical intervention to save a horses life. It is important for those who own horses or work with them to be able to recognize the signs of a colic and determine whether or not a veterinarian should be called to intervene. Colics truly are the number one horse killer.

Treatment
There are different methods of treating colics and some are better suited for certain types of colics. If you suspect your horse to have a colic then the best thing to do is consult with your veterinarian. They will be able to properly diagnose the type of colic and explain to you what method of treatment would be best.
Signs of a colic
Knowing to recognize the signs of a colic are what can give a veterinarian the precious time they need in diagnosing and treating a colic before it becomes lethal for the horse. With that in mind, here are a few signs to help you recognize a horse that may be suffering from a colic:
Prevention
Though the best way of treating a colic is to notify a veterinarian right away, as a rider or horse owner there is much you can do in terms of prevention. The risk of a colic can be reduced by:
Make sure to like our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ETAEquine to be notified when part 2 of the article comes out on Tuesday March 11th, 2014. In Part 2 we will go into further detail about the different types of colics, their risk, and the best ways to treat them.

What is choke?
Choke occurs when there is a blockage in a horse’s esophagus. This blockage can either be due to natural food material or due to a horse ingesting a foreign object of some kind. A horse that suffers from choke will still be able to breathe, as only the esophagus is blocked. Since a horse cannot vomit, it is important to notify a vet right away for treatment. If not treated quickly a horse will become severely dehydrated as it cannot swallow food or water.
Beyond becoming severely dehydrated, choke has a chance of developing into an aspiration pneumonia. An aspiration pneumonia is a kind of bronchopneumonia that develops from foreign materials, including food, entering the bronchial tree. Since a horse cant swallow when suffering from choke, there is a the risk of a build up of additional fluids or material in the esophagus. If any of the fluid or material accumulates enough to reach the pharynx (the section of the throat where the trachea splits from the esophagus) then it spill over into the trachea and lungs causing an aspiration pneumonia.
What causes it?
Chewing: Horses normally chews 70-90 times a minute and will grind its food down to 1.5mm or .06 inches. With this much chewing it is easy to see how important of a role it plays in a horse’s digestive system. A horse that can’t properly grind down its hay or feed will be at risk of choke. Horses with dental issues or horses that bolt their feed are most at risk of choke from chewing complications.
Dry feed: Can cause choke in a horse, especially if the horse does not have access to water or if a horse has chewing difficulties covered above. Feeds that are pelleted and cubed are generally those that pose the greatest risk. Soaking the feed before giving to a horse is a good way to help minimize the risk caused by dry feed.
Foreign objects: This is when a horse ingests any material that cannot be digested properly or are not edible at all, such as wood. Horses that are cribbers and horses that are prone to chewing are those most at risk of choke caused by foreign objects.
Signs of choke
Treatment
The only means of safely treating a horse suffering from choke is to notify a veterinarian right away. A vet will determine if the material blocking the esophagus can either be washed down, broken up and pushed down, or if it should be removed by making an incision in the esophagus through the side of a horse’s neck. If you suspect a horse of suffering from choke, then the horse should be deprived of food and drink until properly examined by a veterinarian. If food and drink is consumed by a horse suffering from choke it could lead to an aspiration pneumonia as explained previously.
Prevention
As a horse owner or rider there is little that can be done other than calling a veterinarian once choke occurs. You can however ensure preventive measures against choke, especially if you know some of your horses are prone to choke or at risk (such as horses with bad teeth or those that bolt feed). Here are just a few of the thing that can be done to help prevent choke from occurring.
ETA-Equine hay
ETA-Equine hay is a good choice for all horses including those prone to choke. Our hay mix blends are long stemmed to promote longer chewing periods, making it harder for horses to bolt the hay. ETA-Equine hay is ideal for trickle feeding horses and keeping their feeding habits closest to how they are in nature. It is also a hay mix blend that is a complete forage, reducing the need for feeds in order to complement the forage. Less processed feed in a diet means less chance for choke to occur from dry feed.
It is for these reasons and more that ETA-Equine hay is fast becoming the trusted equine hay producer to equestrian athletes.

Energy Concerns
During the colder winter months, a horse needs extra energy to maintain its body temperature without decreasing its weight or creating stress for extended periods of time. On average a horse has a roughly 25% higher energy level requirements during the colder months than in the warmer months. This figure can vary though on a number of factors. An owner should always consider the following before implementing a higher energy diet during the winter months:
Once a horse has reached its LCT then it means it is time to increase the caloric intake of the horse to meet the higher energy needs. If not then a horse will begin suffering from cold stress (caused by a horse burning energy to warm up) and if cold stress persists for a day or two, then a horse will begin losing weight.
Feeding Conditions
When looking to increase the caloric energy intake of a horse there are numerous things to take into account such as: what sort of forage is best, is feed necessary, are supplements necessary, and how to know if a horse has an inadequate feed intake. Here we have out lined some useful information, to go along with the information above on energy concerns, when it comes to feeding your horse in winter.
Equally important is being able to recognize inadequate feed and or water intake along with being able to accurately recognize weight loss through routine observations. When it comes to inadequate feed/water intake there are clear signs that can give a horse owner or groom an indication that this might be an issue. Feces that is dry and or sparse, a reduced feed intake, increased wood chewing activity, and weight loss are all indicators of an issue with inadequate feed/water intake. An easy way to check for weight loss, if there is no access to a weight tape or a Body Condition Score (BCS), is to feel a horse’s ribs and neck to verify if there is a loss of condition. This is especially useful when a thinker coat of hair or blankets make it harder to notice weight changes at a glance.
Using the points out lined in this article you will be able to properly feed you horse during the colder months and ensure proper energy levels resulting in a horse that is calm, comfy, happy, and ready to perform. Just like the Masters Circle riders of the ETA-Equine riding team who all use the specially developed blends of premium ETA-Equine horse hay.

OPTIMAL FEEDING IN WARM WEATHER
Why is ETA-Equine hay the best choice of horse hay:
A horse has a neutral temperature zone of 68° F, when a horse’s body temperature rises above 68° it begins to sweat and breathe more heavily to cool down.
It is easy to return to 68° F after training in cooler regions, but in places like Florida it presents more of a challenge.
During hot weather and muscular activity, a horse’s body temperature increases and he must increase his sweating rate and respiratory rate to decrease the heat load. These vital bodily activities cost energy which could be used for performance or training energy needs.
With this in mind we wanted to put together a few tips on feeding a horse in warmer climates ensuring a healthy horse performing at peak levels.
DON’T FEED TOO MUCH PROTEIN
Protein is used in energy production and its breakdown will allow a horse to absorb the essential amino acids used in repairing and replacing of muscle tissues. Much like how any human athlete knows the benefit in eating healthy proteins to help build muscles and recover after a hard training session, the issue with over feeding protein in training and in competitions is in the heat it generates to breakdown the proteins. Once a horse has enough energy absorbed from breaking down the necessary amount of proteins, the left over proteins are converted in needless energy that has to go somewhere.
This is what generates unnecessary heat as the body must process the extra proteins; this extra heat in turn means the horse must burn further energy to cool down, be it by drinking more water, sweating, or increased breathing. It all means that the extra energy burning is effectively being counterproductive to what the proteins were intended for.
This is something we see all too often with horse owners who are unsure what kind of hay and forage to feed their horse, or unsure if the hay they are feeding is the best. Many horse owners insist on wrongly feeding high protein Alfalfa legume to their horses which leads to the situation described above.
According to Dr. Martin Adams “A horse in intense work only needs slightly over 10% protein in the total diet and that is easily met with good quality hay and (limited) fortified commercial horse feed.”1 Comparing this to top quality Alfalfa hay which contains 17% to over 20% crude protein levels it becomes apparent how improper forage can make the situation worse for a horse and even more so if the forage is supplemented with an overabundance of high protein commercial horse feed.
Here at ETA-Equine our hay is always tested and our proprietary “Townships Blend”® (containing: Timothy, Brome, Orchard, Clover, and limited Alfalfa) is made to meet the proper nutrient levels with 9% to 10% crude protein levels, for which many professional riders located in Florida are now turning to for their horses’ needs.

Concentrated feeds are known for their high energy levels, which tend to cause an overabundance in energy, resulting in an agitated and distracted horse. By feeding quality hay developed for horses, and not the standard hay sold and developed for bovines, a horse will be more calm, focused, and attentive. Beyond the obvious implication that a calm and focused horse increases the speed of the learning curves for both horse and rider, the horse’s health is improved by having a hind gut filled on a constant basis with all the proper nutrients found in the forage blending process developed by ETA-Equine,” said Mike Samson, President of Eastern Townships Acreages.

Robin Esrock at travel national geographic has written a great little article about the Eastern Townships. The place where we at Eastern Townships Acreages are located and grow all our premium quality hay you have come to love. Have a read through the excerpt bellow and who knows, maybe you will want to visit this picturesque area. The one thing Robin Esrock seems to have forgotten is this area is amazing for trail riding with a view, take it from us.
It seems fitting that the Eastern Townships originated in 1796 when the British granted land to Loyalists fleeing the United States after the American Revolution. Today, this region, which borders the U.S. for more than 186 miles, is a popular all-season vacation destination for New Englanders seeking a convenient, yet distinctively different, vacation in predominantly French-speaking Quebec.
“Americans coming from Vermont might feel they’ve changed continents as well as countries,” says resident Shannon Gallup. “I encourage visitors to travel around the area, because even the people who live here travel quite a bit to visit all the pretty little towns. We have one of the largest concentrations of organic farms in the country, and there are lots of vineyards and farmers markets.”
Meander the highways crisscrossing the region to visit apple orchards, maple sugar shacks, and pristine villages and lakes. And to appreciate the bond between the Eastern Townships and its southern neighbors, stop in at the Haskell Free Library and Opera House in Stanstead. Designed to straddle the border—the stage is in Quebec and the audience is in Derby Line, Vermont—the gray granite building has been providing equal access to Canadian and U.S. patrons since 1904. There’s no passport required to take a book from the Canadian stacks and check it out at U.S. circulation desk.

Hopefully we will see you around.

Professional riders have no problem identifying Premium Quality Horse Hay. That’s why at EASTERN TOWNSHIPS ACREAGES we work closely with the professional rider community. They recognize that EASTERN TOWNSHIPS ACREAGES produces quality hay to be leafy, fine-stemmed, and adequately but not overly dry. Since two-thirds of the plant nutrients are in the leaves, the leaf-to-stem ratio should be high. The hay is not to brittle but instead soft to the touch, with little or no shattering of the leaves. Lost leaves means lost nutrition. There is no excessive moisture that could cause overheating and spoilage.
Making premium horse hay involves a valuable balance of knowledge and skill. From a groom’s standpoint, there’s nothing like snipping the strings on a bale of EASTERN TOWNSHIPS ACREAGES hay mid-winter and finding soft, green, leafy hay inside. Horses thrive on such hay and REQUIRE LITTLE GRAIN SUPPLEMENTATION.
Keep the hay-making process in mind as you make your hay selection this fall and this winter.
Choose what professional riders are choosing — EASTERN TOWNSHIPS ACREAGES professional horse hay.
